Roles and Responsibilities

The Person in Charge is responsible for:

  • Clearing the area and reducing the risk of further harm to the injured person by securing the area and protecting the injured person from the elements.
  • Designating an individual to supervise and manage the other participants.
  • Protecting themselves and others from exposure to bodily fluids by using appropriate personal protective equipment, such as gloves, when necessary.
  • Assessing the injured person’s ABCs:
    • Airway: Check that the airway is clear.
    • Breathing: Check that the person is breathing.
    • Circulation: Check for a pulse and signs of circulation.
    • Major bleeding: Check for and control any major bleeding when possible.
  • Remaining with the injured person until emergency medical services (EMS) arrive and the injured person is transferred to appropriate medical care.
  • Completing an accident or incident report form following the emergency.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Calling 911 or the appropriate emergency service when required.
  • Providing the emergency dispatcher with all necessary information, including:
    • Facility name and exact location.
    • Nature of the injury or emergency.
    • Condition of the injured person.
    • First aid or other assistance that has already been provided.
    • The best access point for emergency responders.
  • Clearing traffic and ensuring that the facility entrance and access road are unobstructed before the ambulance arrives.
  • Waiting at the facility driveway or designated entrance to direct the ambulance and emergency responders to the injured person.
  • Contacting the emergency contact person listed in the injured participant’s medical profile.

Emergency Response Procedure
